The Colorado Open – Day 2
The sun was out, and at 9am the asphalt out behind Front Range CrossFit was hot. This may have been a benefit in warming and loosening up some tired and sore bodies. None the less once the count down ended for the first heat, the bodies, and tires began flying.
Men were flipping 500 lb tires 5 times, sprinting 50 meters out and then back (100 meter total), then flipping the tire 5 more times; women sprinted the same distances but flipped “only” 350 lb tires. The event seemed to be a crowd favorite, a chance to see top flight CrossFit athletes in a sprint event that wasn’t a single rep max lift. Heat #13 saw Josh Stavnes of CrossFit Flex Gym post the first sub-40 second time, and in Heat #15 Melody Resetarits of FRCF was the first woman to break 50 seconds. The judging, as with all the events, was consistent and strict and a few athletes had to be called back for not crossing the 50m turn line or for not doing double foot jumps in and out of the tires; heart breaking reminders of the cost of consistency.
The top three finishers in the women’s workout all came from FRCF. Jasmine Dever, Kristen Olson and Melody Resetarits finished 1, 2 & 3 respectively. In the men’s workout Luke Lazzo of FRCF had the fastest time of the day, 36.75. Matt Hathcock of CrossFit Unbroken and Josh Stavnes of CrossFit Flex Gym came in second and third.
After a brief break the competition went back inside for the final workout of the day, a two round medley of rowing, burpees, kettlebell snatches and ball slams. The early woman’s heats had many athletes battling to find their rhythm with kettlebells and ball slams while trying to beat the 18 minute cut off. But like sharks smelling blood in the water, these athletes raced to what they knew was the final finish line of the weekend.
In heat #5 Karen Waeschle of CrossFit Thin Air put on a clinic in the efficient movement of a kettlebell and came in with what ended up being the 4th fastest time of the workout. The final heat saw the fastest times of the workout. Jasmine Dever and Kristen Olson of FRCF went 1 and 2 for the event. Louisa Berky also of FRCF posted the third fastest time in the 6th heat, 11:40.
With these times the top women finishers for the 2010 Colorado Open are:
1st | Jasmine Dever | FRCF |
2nd | Kristen Olson | FRCF |
3rd | Shannan Simpson | FRCF |
4th | Cherie Chan | CrossFit Verve |
5th | Louisa Berky | FRCF |
Congratulations Ladies!

From the women’s final we went straight into the men’s final workout. Again the challenge became finishing this volume of work in the allotted 18 minutes. In heat # 2 the unofficial “Most Inspirational Athlete” of the event, Kevin Wu of FRCF, started the workout. When you weigh 127 lbs, a 24 kg kettlebell and a 45 lb ball slam make up a significant percentage of your bodyweight. When WuDaMan choose to use those weights for his workout, several athletes were overheard saying, "Well, there goes any excuse I have of not doing workouts as prescribed." The crowd was on their feet the entire second half of his workout which ended 3 ball slams into his final 30. Rudyard Kipling once hypothesized that both victory and defeat are imposters, but everyone in the gym, for that workout, knew what they had seen was extraordinary.
Extraordinary accomplishments of an individual and collective nature continued to roll through the afternoon. The men’s final heat took off at a blistering pace which was necessary to pass Josh Steger of FRCF time of 11 minutes from Heat #7. The pace didn’t drop off and remained neck and neck to the end. Even so, only Matt Hathcock of CrossFit Unbroken and Matt Johnson of MBS CrossFit managed to beat Josh’s time.
With those final workout times the men’s standings for the 2010 Colorado Open are:
1st | Matt Hathcock | CrossFit Unbroken |
2nd | Nate Beard | CrossFit RED |
3rd | Dan Fink | CrossFit Castle Rock |
4th | Chris Hoppe | Progressive Fitness CrossFit |
5th | Kevin Montoya | CrossFit Flex Gym |
Congrats Gentlemen!

Awards were handed out to the top three finishers and as the Colorado Open wrapped up more fellowship was shared by competitors and supporters alike.
We hope you all had a fantastic weekend! Stay fit, and see you again in one year.
Corgratulations everyone! Sounds like a hell of a good time!

As always, a great event by Skip, Jodi and Bradley. Thank you guys so much, what an awesome event. And the judges and volunteers were amazing! That's a long tough job but so appreciated.
Two years ago the Colorado Open was my first CrossFit event, and I have been hooked since then. I was so happy this weekend to see so many competitors (especially the ladies!!) get out there and do this event, many for the first time. It was inspirational and so cool to be a part of. We are so lucky to have an event like this in Colorado that is exciting and legit, but all for fun. I hope to see as many or more next year!

It looks like once again those who stole the show were the ones with the best sportsmanship. Trophies never matter as much as the attitude you carry yourself with. Thank you to those who didn't win but put your heart out there, volunteered and cheered everyone one and treated other competitors with respect. You are what Crossfit is all about!

I just want to add a few words to the comments posted by Jumper and Mo.
This was an extremely fun event. I strongly encourage any and all CrossFitters out there in Colorado to be part of it next year.
Consider this: you go to the gym at least 4 times a week. You rip your hands at least once a month. You think it is normal to walk like a cowboy because your legs are sore. You get weird bruises on your chest from cleans that went astray. Your shins bear the marks of many deadlifts. You wear silly socks when you work out. You drink strange powders mixed into stranger liquids and eat outrageous amounts of meat, vegetables, nuts and seeds. You take ice baths-ICE BATHS, for pete's sake!
It is so satisfying to have a goal to strive for in doing all those "crazy" things that we all do.
The Colorado Open is the perfect goal for every CrossFitter. You don't have to be one of the "firebreathers" to compete. Everyone in the event is very supportive, and is in it for the fun that is putting yourself to the test against these challenging workouts.
Thanks to Skip, Jodi, Brad and all the volunteers and judges. You guys are simply great at putting these events together.
Congrats to all of the athletes that competed, you really earned that cheat night meal (and the sore legs that I am sure all are feeling right now!)

G you should talk to KO, she is the genius behind the musical taste at FRCF.

Another awesome weekend! Thanks Skip and Jodi for another fun, well run event! No one does it like you guys. Judges and volunteers, BIG thank you. I had a different judge every event and all were great, informed, and encouraging...and loud:). Makes all the difference in the world. Devers- thanks for letting us take over next door and creating some sweet awards, love the tire flip (props Scuba!). It was nice to see some familiar faces and meet new competitors, the CO Crossfit community is a rad one. Congrats to all who competed this weekend! It was great to compete this weekend, but nice to have an event like this to focus on the fun :) A fellow crossfitter with very fine taste pointed out, “when we end the day with a PBR, we all end up with blue ribbons”. Well said my friend, you are forever a champion in my heart. Cheers.

oh and more than happy to share any music/playlist ([email protected])... EVERYONE at FRCF loves it:). Actually, I’m not sure those were my cd's, but I'll take credit in the mean time. Man, that makes my day.

As usual for Skip and Jodi they put on an awesome event. I always have fun (after the butterflies) at these events. One of the coolest things for me is watching people push themselves to "that" point. Its inspiring and awesome to watch. Especially people who aren't always in the spot light. One of my favorite's this time was Kurt, Utah, and KC all neck and neck during the last workout. Working to their absolute highest capacity. So cool. And then there is Wu, what else can you say.........
It never ceases to amaze me the sheer number of women in our gym that are sooooo good at crossfit. All of our women are so fun to watch and all did so awesome. I guess it shows when we have 4 of the top 5 spots.
I love our crossfit family. I am so fortunate to be a part of it.
